Donald Trump is reportedly weighing a highly conditional trip to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan but only if Team USA advances to the men’s hockey gold medal game.
According to Italian media reports, preparations are quietly underway for a short, tightly controlled presidential visit that would take place solely if the U.S. team reaches the final. Security teams are said to be mapping out contingency plans, with Air Force One ready to depart on short notice should the Americans secure a spot in Sunday’s championship matchup.
Unlike a traditional overseas visit filled with meetings and public appearances, this potential trip would be streamlined and narrowly focused. Italian outlet Corriere della Sera described it as “brief and almost surgical.” The reported plan would have Trump land in Italy, travel directly to the Santa Giulia Arena to watch the gold medal game, attend the closing ceremony, and then depart shortly afterward.
No extended diplomatic engagements, sightseeing, formal dinners, or overnight stays are reportedly part of the tentative schedule.
The possible visit comes amid heightened political tensions surrounding the Games. Vice President JD Vance faced loud boos during the opening ceremony when his image appeared on arena screens. Since then, political commentary has surfaced around the Olympics, including debate over athletes speaking out on domestic issues.
Vance publicly urged competitors to focus on competition rather than politics, saying athletes are there “to represent your country and hopefully win a medal,” not to engage in political debate.
Meanwhile, Italian officials who previously coordinated visits from Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are reportedly preparing expanded security protocols in the event of a presidential appearance. If the trip proceeds, Trump would travel directly from Air Force One to the hockey arena, then attend the closing ceremony, where the Games will formally transition to the 2030 host in the French Alps.
