Russia Rebukes Donald Trump's Plan for American Iron Dome

On Friday, Russia condemned President Donald Trump's proposal to create an American "Iron Dome" missile defense system, warning that it could lead to military "confrontation" in space.

According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, Trump's Iron Dome initiative "envisions a significant enhancement of the U.S. nuclear arsenal and capabilities for conducting combat operations in space, including the development and deployment of space-based interception systems." She continued, stating, "We perceive this as yet another sign of the U.S.'s intention to turn space into a theater of armed conflict and deploy weapons there."

Tensions between the U.S. and Russia have escalated since Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Trump has urged Putin to end the war, warning of economic sanctions and tariffs. He has also called on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to increase oil production to lower prices and undermine Russia.

This week, Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. military to begin "construction of the great Iron Dome missile defense shield, which will be entirely made in the USA." The Iron Dome, originally developed by Israel, is an air defense system designed to intercept incoming rockets and shells, with U.S. support for its creation.

In a statement translated by Agence France-Presse (AFP), Zakharova likened Trump’s Iron Dome plan to former President Ronald Reagan’s "Star Wars" missile defense proposal, calling it "odious." She further stated that the U.S. missile defense system would undermine "Russian and Chinese strategic deterrence capabilities."

Zakharova is not the first Russian official to publicly criticize Trump's Iron Dome proposal. Earlier this week, Grigory Mashkov, a special ambassador from the Russian Foreign Ministry, suggested that Russia might expand its nuclear arsenal if the U.S. proceeds with the missile defense project. "In the context of the ongoing confrontation with the West, which seeks to strategically harm Russia, we may have to consider moving away from nuclear and missile restrictions in favor of increasing their quantity and quality," Mashkov said in an interview with Russian state news agency Tass.

During a Monday appearance in Florida, President Trump emphasized that the American Iron Dome would be "made right here in the USA."

In response to Trump's plan, Zakharova remarked during Friday's briefing, "To put it mildly, these U.S. actions will not help to ease tensions."

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed on Monday that the development of the American Iron Dome "is progressing rapidly."
