Former President Donald Trump has called for investigations into pollsters who recently reported declining approval ratings for him, accusing them of "election fraud."
Trump pointed to polls from The New York Times, ABC News/The Washington Post, and Fox News, which placed his approval ratings at 42 percent, 39 percent, and 44 percent respectively.
Posting on Truth Social Monday, Trump wrote: "They are negative criminals who apologize to their subscribers and readers after I win elections — big, much bigger than their polls show."
Throughout his political career, Trump has consistently attacked polls unfavorable to him as "rigged," while elevating polls that show him in a positive light. His latest demand for investigations marks a further escalation in his efforts to discredit institutions he views as adversarial.
Polling Trump's base has historically posed challenges to researchers, raising concerns that surveys may sometimes underestimate his actual support. Additionally, presidential approval polls are often volatile and represent only a temporary snapshot of public opinion.
The ABC News/Washington Post poll found Trump's approval rating had fallen to the lowest point recorded for any president at this stage in office over the past 80 years.
Meanwhile, a New York Times/Siena College poll reported that only 31 percent of respondents approved of Trump's handling of the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, and just 43 percent approved of his handling of the economy.
Responding further to the polls, Trump posted: "Great pollster John McLaughlin, one of the most highly respected in the industry, has just stated that The Failing New York Times poll and the ABC/Washington Post poll about a person named DONALD J. TRUMP, ME, are FAKE POLLS FROM FAKE NEWS ORGANIZATIONS.
"They suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. THEY ARE SICK, writing almost exclusively negative stories about me no matter how well I am doing (99.9% success at the Border, BEST NUMBER EVER!) and are TRULY THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE! I wish them well, but will continue to fight to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
In another Truth Social post Monday, Trump added: "We don't have a Free and Fair 'Press' in this country anymore. We have a Press that writes BAD STORIES and CHEATS, BIG, ON POLLS. IT IS COMPROMISED AND CORRUPT. SAD!"
John McLaughlin, Trump's campaign pollster, also commented to Newsweek, saying: "When President Trump received 50 percent of the popular vote, but The New York Times includes only 37 percent of his voters in their poll and ABC/Washington Post includes just 34 percent Trump supporters, it appears they deliberately biased their polls against President Trump."
Trump’s approval ratings are expected to remain fluid in the coming weeks as key policy debates, such as those over tariffs, continue. Prolonged negative polling could have implications for Republicans as they head into the November 2026 midterm elections.
