CNN interrupted its live broadcast to deliver breaking news regarding a significant shift in public opinion on immigration. According to the network, President Donald Trump’s net approval rating on immigration has risen sharply, with analysts describing the increase as “like a rocket.”
CNN’s chief data reporter, Harry Enten, noted that the public’s support for Trump’s immigration policies has grown substantially, particularly in the wake of his decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles following protests over immigration enforcement.
“This is Trump’s net approval rating on immigration,” Enten said during a segment with host John Berman. “It has soared compared to where it stood during his first term.” Enten pointed out that Trump's net approval has moved from -21% in 2017 to +1% today.
“Trump is leaning into this issue because he sees that it’s resonating with voters,” Enten continued. “And it’s not just general immigration policy—he’s gaining ground on the specific elements too.”
A CBS News poll shown during the broadcast supports Enten’s analysis. The survey found that 54% of respondents approve of Trump’s recent mass deportation orders, while 51% expressed support for ICE operations within local communities. These numbers reflect a notable shift in public opinion compared to Trump’s first term.
Enten also cited an Ipsos poll indicating that Republican voters now have a 19-point edge over Democrats when it comes to immigration policy. “The perception is growing that Democrats are out of touch on this issue,” Enten remarked, highlighting the GOP’s increasing credibility on immigration since 2024.
Meanwhile, demonstrations over federal immigration enforcement turned violent in Los Angeles over the weekend. Authorities reported that 39 people were arrested during the unrest.
