Donald Trump heaps praise on mayor after she makes screeching policy U-turn

Why did Donald Trump suddenly praise Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser after months of criticizing her?

Former President Donald Trump has made a surprising reversal in his stance toward Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. For years, Trump was one of her harshest critics, often clashing with her leadership. But recently, as crime rates in the nation’s capital dropped, he publicly thanked her for supporting his decision to send in the National Guard.

On Truth Social, Trump claimed that the partnership with Bowser helped reduce crime to “virtually nothing” in D.C. He contrasted her cooperation with other Democratic leaders, whom he accused of ignoring rising violence in their cities. Trump even credited Bowser with a major popularity boost, saying her approval ratings had risen by 25% because of her support.

Mayor Bowser, at a press conference, acknowledged the impact of the federal surge. She noted that in just a 20-day period, carjackings in the city dropped by nearly 87%. However, she also made it clear that she disagrees with some of Trump’s tactics, such as the use of out-of-state National Guard troops and masked ICE agents in communities.

It’s important to remember that just weeks earlier, Bowser had strongly opposed Trump’s approach. She described the takeover of D.C. police resources as “unprecedented” and even called it an “authoritarian push.” At that time, she urged residents to defend the city’s autonomy and support a Democratic majority in Congress as a safeguard.

This sudden shift highlights how politics and public safety often intersect in complex ways. While Trump celebrated the drop in crime as proof of his “law-and-order” strategy, Bowser balanced her remarks by recognizing results but also criticizing federal overreach.

Whether this unusual alignment between Trump and Bowser continues remains to be seen. But for now, both are claiming some credit for Washington, D.C.’s recent decline in crime rates.
