Trump even credited Bowser with a major popularity boost, saying her approval ratings had risen by 25% because of her support.

Mayor Bowser, at a press conference, acknowledged the impact of the federal surge. She noted that in just a 20-day period, carjackings in the city dropped by nearly 87%. However, she also made it clear that she disagrees with some of Trump’s tactics, such as the use of out-of-state National Guard troops and masked ICE agents in communities.

She described the takeover of D.C. police resources as “unprecedented” and even called it an “authoritarian push.” At that time, she urged residents to defend the city’s autonomy and support a Democratic majority in Congress as a safeguard.
