Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, is facing intense criticism after posting about a rise in voluntary deportations among detained immigrants. Many accused her and other Trump administration officials of celebrating the suffering of those who “lost hope” due to prolonged detentions in ICE facilities and jails.
At 28, Leavitt is no stranger to public backlash for her social media activity and combative press briefings. Previously, she was criticized for praising a Department of Homeland Security mission in Minneapolis as a “resounding success,” despite it resulting in the deaths of two U.S. citizens at the hands of ICE and Border Patrol agents. Now, her tone on immigration matters has sparked fresh outrage.
On X (formerly Twitter), Leavitt shared a story highlighting a record number of voluntary deportations by detained immigrants frustrated with long-term detention and uncertain legal outcomes. Her caption read: “Voluntary departures hit record high as detained immigrants lose hope of getting released or winning in court,” according to Mirror US.
The post drew widespread condemnation for appearing to treat the situation as positive news. Critics called her a “demon” for seemingly celebrating people’s despair. Comments ranged from pointed questions like, “So you aren’t deporting as you say, but purposely detaining them to break them?” to sarcastic remarks, “So you’re admitting to running concentration camps. Good to know.” Others highlighted the contrast between her public image as a devout Catholic and the tone of her recent post, questioning, “When people losing hope is winning to you, perhaps you may want to revisit that Christ bit.”
This controversy comes after a personal incident involving Leavitt’s family. Her nephew’s mother, Bruna Caroline Ferreira, was detained by ICE in November over visa and residency issues. Ferreira later criticized Leavitt, who is her son’s godmother, for supporting her detention. She told People Magazine: “Just because you went to a Catholic school doesn’t make you a good Catholic. You are a mother now. How would you feel if you were in my shoes? How would you feel if somebody did this to you?”
Leavitt’s comments and actions continue to fuel debate about the administration’s approach to immigration and the ethical implications of celebrating the suffering of those in detention.
She won't be able to hide, along with the entire administration, when they are voted out or overthrown by the people. They won't have much protection then and POTUS will be DEAD soon.
