Rumors are circulating that King Charles may make a state visit to the United States in the coming months. However, sources suggest that the King is not particularly fond of US President Donald Trump, despite their outwardly cordial interactions during past visits.
While King Charles, 77, and President Trump have often appeared friendly, including during the most recent state visit to the UK last year, insiders indicate that the relationship is less warm behind the scenes. The monarch, who is also King of Canada, reportedly opposed the previous visit because Trump’s policies, including tariffs on Canadian exports, had angered many Canadians. Nonetheless, the state visit proceeded at Windsor Castle in September.
It is believed that Buckingham Palace is hesitant about a US visit this year, especially one involving Trump. The proposed visit is expected to coincide with the 250th anniversary of American independence, potentially in April, and Queen Camilla is expected to accompany the King.
According to Tim Shipman writing in The Spectator, someone familiar with state visit negotiations said:
“The King didn’t want Trump to come on a state visit here because he’s King of Canada and Trump threatened Canada. The palace doesn’t want the King to go on the return state visit, but they can’t get out of it.”
Tensions between Trump and Canada have resurfaced recently. The White House reportedly demanded that Canada "share authority" over the Gordie Howe International Bridge, linking Ontario to Michigan, and threatened to block its opening. While the bridge is funded by Canada, it is publicly owned by both Canada and Michigan. Discussions between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reportedly clarified that Canada funded the project and that both countries maintain joint ownership.
This is not the only recent friction. Trump also threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Canada over a trade deal with China just last month, further straining relations.
Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on Shipman’s claims.
