President Donald Trump recently drew attention for his remarks about rapper Nicki Minaj, praising her appearance in a manner reminiscent of his earlier comments about former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
At the 100th annual Black History Month reception on Wednesday, Trump appeared to shift his focus from policy to celebrity admiration, highlighting the 43-year-old rapper, who has become an outspoken MAGA supporter. During his speech, Trump admitted he found it hard to look away from Minaj, who had recently declared herself his “No. 1 fan.”
“How about Nicki Minaj? Do we love Nicki Minaj?” Trump asked, before adding, “I love Nicki Minaj, she was here a couple of weeks ago, she’s so beautiful.” The president continued, noting, “Her skin is so beautiful, I said, ‘Nicki, you’re so beautiful.’” Laughter echoed through the room as he went on to comment on her long nails, joking, “I said, ‘Nicki, are they real?’ She didn’t want to get into that,” he said with amusement.
Trump’s remarks culminated with a nod to Minaj’s political alignment: “But she was so beautiful and great. And more importantly she gets it.”
This incident follows a similar pattern in which Trump publicly complimented women in contexts unrelated to their professional roles. Last year, he praised 28-year-old former Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during an economic address, remarking on her “beautiful face” and lips in a way that diverted attention from the speech’s main topic. During a Pennsylvania rally, he said, “When she goes on television, Fox… they dominate… When she gets up there with that beautiful face and those lips that don’t stop… like a little machine gun,” mimicking sound effects for emphasis.
Trump had also praised Leavitt in an August 2026 Newsmax interview, stating, “It’s that face. It’s that brain. It’s those lips, the way they move. They move like she’s a machine gun. I don’t think anybody has ever had a better press secretary than Karoline.”
Trump’s recent comments about Minaj follow a period of public enthusiasm between the rapper and the former president. Minaj’s tributes have included an X post featuring AI-manipulated images of her husband, Kenneth Petty, and Trump in matching pink outfits, sparking criticism for being “cringe” and “tacky.”
The connection between Minaj and Trump began in January, when she appeared alongside him at the Trump Accounts Summit in Washington, D.C. Since then, she has regularly praised the president and attended MAGA-aligned events, including appearances with conservative activist Erika Kirk.
This latest episode underscores the unusual blend of politics and celebrity that has become a hallmark of Trump’s public interactions.
