Stephen Colbert, the longtime host of The Late Show, has once again taken aim at President Donald Trump, following a new poll revealing that nearly half of Americans consider the former president “dangerous.”
Colbert, who is nearing the end of his decade-long tenure after CBS canceled The Late Show last year, highlighted the findings of an Economist/YouGov/MeTarzan survey on Wednesday, February 18. The poll indicated that 47% of Americans view Trump as racist, 49% say he is corrupt, 46% describe him as cruel, and half believe he is a danger to the country.
Opening his segment, Colbert quipped, “It is so important to Donald Trump that he celebrate Black History Month not just because it’s tradition for presidents, but also because 47% of Americans say he’s racist.” He added a humorous aside, joking about how poll questions can feel absurd: “It’s like a wedding invitation asking, ‘Chicken, fish, or do you think Donald Trump is a racist?’ And I’m like, can I choose two?”
The comedian didn’t hold back on the other poll results either. “49% say he’s corrupt; 46% say he’s cruel; 50% say he’s dangerous,” Colbert said, before adding a sarcastic punchline: “The other 50% say, ‘Ladies love a bad boy.’ Do you ladies? The audience shouted, ‘No!’”
Colbert’s critique comes in the wake of several controversies involving Trump. Recently, the former president faced backlash for posting an AI-generated video on social media depicting former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama as apes. The White House removed the video, claiming it was posted “erroneously” by a staffer. Trump, however, refused to apologize, insisting he “didn’t make a mistake,” while Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed criticism as “fake outrage,” claiming the video was meant to parody The Lion King, despite the absence of apes in the original 1994 Disney film.
The segment also follows criticism of Trump’s remarks during a Black History Month event at the White House, where he made unusual comments about rapper Nicki Minaj’s appearance, praising her “beautiful” skin and nails.
Colbert has been one of Trump’s most vocal late-night critics, especially since the announcement last July that The Late Show would end in May 2026, closing his 10-year run as host. The cancellation was finalized shortly after the merger between Skydance Media and CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global.
