A Trump voter has publicly disowned the President, describing him as a “rotten man” after a deeply controversial social media post reignited accusations of racism and dishonesty.
The supporter called into an American television phone-in show to express anger over a now-deleted video shared by Trump. The clip portrayed former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes, dancing in a jungle setting to “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The footage appeared to be AI-generated and was posted alongside claims about voting machine anomalies.
The video triggered swift and widespread backlash. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office condemned it as “disgusting behaviour by the President” and urged “every single Republican” to publicly denounce the post, calling it a dangerous escalation in rhetoric coming from the White House.
The fallout adds to a growing pattern of controversies surrounding Trump, from questions about Melania Trump’s true feelings and her latest film causing internal conflict, to renewed attention on a would-be assassin linked to Trump. Media outlets have repeatedly broken into regular programming, including moments when Fox News abruptly halted its broadcast and cut to breaking news that proved embarrassing for Trump. At the same time, alarm has grown over Trump’s chilling threat toward Iran and the White House’s defense of the racist video.
When asked whether he had voted for Trump in all three elections, the caller confirmed that he had but said he now deeply regrets that decision. He criticized the administration’s economic promises, saying they failed to materialize in his state.
“I bought into the talk about job creation,” he said. “There are no jobs left in New Mexico. Things are worse now than they were before.”
Former Obama administration official Ben Rhodes also weighed in, arguing that history would judge the moment harshly. He said future Americans would remember the Obamas as respected figures, while Trump would be studied as “a stain on our history.”
Despite the outrage, the White House attempted to defend the video, describing it as an “internet meme.” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the backlash as “fake outrage,” a response that only intensified criticism.
Another Republican voter later echoed the apology on C-SPAN, calling Trump unfit for office and apologizing to the public for ever supporting him.
“This is not a decent man,” he said. “He’s pathetic as a president. I want to apologize to the entire country for supporting this rotten, rotten man.”
I am happy you woke up.
