President Donald Trump is facing criticism over reports that he ordered the firing of government inspectors general, allegedly to eliminate oversight of his administration.
Reuters, citing an unnamed source, revealed that Trump directed the dismissal of 17 inspectors general, although the White House has yet to release an official statement confirming the action.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, condemned the decision, arguing it would facilitate corruption by removing crucial watchdogs. Inspectors general are independent officials responsible for investigating allegations of fraud, waste, and abuse within government agencies. The reported firings appear to contravene federal law, which mandates that Congress be notified of the removal of Senate-confirmed inspectors general at least 30 days prior to their termination. Critics argue that Trump's alleged actions are an attempt to dismantle vital oversight.
Key Points: According to Reuters, inspectors general at various agencies, including the Departments of State, Defense, and Transportation, received emails from the White House on Friday announcing their immediate dismissal. Many of those affected were appointed during Trump's first term, though Michael Horowitz, the inspector general at the Department of Justice, was not dismissed.
The move was expected, as some individuals involved in Trump's transition had previously hinted at such an overhaul, and it mirrors similar actions taken by the president in 2020 when he removed five inspectors general.
While heads of government agencies typically change with each new administration, inspectors general often continue serving across presidential terms.
Public Reaction: The news sparked an outcry from critics of the president. Senator Warren voiced her concerns on X (formerly Twitter), accusing Trump of purging independent watchdogs and dismantling mechanisms that check his power, which could lead to widespread corruption.
Entrepreneur Brian Krassenstein called it a "brazen act" that would enable Trump to appoint loyalists, while public health scientist Eric Feigl-Ding described the move as dangerous.
What People Are Saying:
Senator Warren wrote on X: "It's a purge of independent watchdogs in the middle of the night. Inspectors general are charged with rooting out government waste, fraud, abuse, and preventing misconduct. President Trump is dismantling checks on his power and paving the way for widespread corruption."
Representative Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat from Texas, said: "Inspectors General are key public servants tasked w/ holding our government accountable. They're independent, nonpartisan whose work is identifying fraud, waste, & importantly, abuse. Trump just fired them all. Make no mistake: he's purging those who will protect the rule of law."
Journalist Anne Applebaum tweeted: "Firing independent watchdogs is straight out of the authoritarian playbook. Removes another obstacle to corruption and abuse of power."
Sidney Powell, Trump's former lawyer, stated: "Existing IGs are virtually worthless. They may bring a few minor things to light but accomplish next to nothing. The whole system needs to be revamped."
Looking Ahead: During his 2024 campaign, Trump has vowed to drastically overhaul the federal bureaucracy, a move that could impact millions of government employees nationwide.
