Donald Trump has sparked fresh online chatter after a moment from a live broadcast left viewers questioning whether he remembered his wife’s background.
During the red-carpet premiere of Melania, a new documentary centered on the former First Lady, Trump was asked by a reporter how he felt about Melania “telling her story.” He praised her efforts, saying she had “done a great job,” before shifting to talk about her origins. However, instead of naming her country of birth, Trump described it vaguely as “a faraway country” that was “clean, beautiful, safe,” adding that it didn’t have “problems like others” and that Melania speaks many languages. Notably, he never identified the country itself.
The omission quickly caught the attention of viewers. Clips of the exchange circulated online, with many people speculating that Trump appeared unsure of where Melania is from. Social media users openly questioned the moment, with several pointing out that he repeatedly avoided naming her country. Others joked that a follow-up question from the reporter might have cleared things up.
The documentary, titled Melania, is scheduled for theatrical release this Friday. Reports suggest Amazon invested heavily in the project, spending around $35 million on marketing and an additional $40 million to secure distribution rights. The film follows Melania Trump during the 20 days leading up to Donald Trump’s second inauguration last January.
Despite the significant investment, early signs indicate the film may struggle commercially. At least one major cinema in the Jacksonville metro area showed zero ticket sales for a prime evening screening, with all seats still available at the time of reporting. Industry insiders in the UK have also expressed doubts about audience interest, with Vue CEO Tim Richards stating that demand for the documentary has been “weak” so far.
