Donald Trump has once again raised questions about his health after viewers noticed concerning behavior during a recent public appearance.
The former president attended the premiere of Melania: Twenty Days to History at the newly renamed Trump–Kennedy Center on Thursday, a documentary detailing the lead-up to his second inauguration. While Melania Trump conducted interviews, Donald Trump was observed standing beside her, swaying slightly and appearing to struggle to stay awake, which quickly drew attention online.
Reactions on X were immediate and pointed. One user remarked, "Folks! Donald Trump looks thrilled to be there." Another wrote, "He can't wait to go to sleep." Other comments ranged from, "Both of them are in serious pain," to "He can barely stand up, and he knows the movie is going to bomb," and, "I don’t think he even knew where he was!"
This episode comes amid ongoing speculation about Trump’s tendency to appear drowsy during public events. Michael Wolff, Trump’s biographer, noted that his apparent habit of dozing off during meetings and appearances has left aides unsure how to respond. Wolff told the Daily Beast:
"I never remember Trump falling asleep; it used to be he got bored and then would walk out. You can't wake him up because the cameras are rolling. Everyone is in a low-level panic all the time about Trump falling asleep."
He added that when Trump does nod off, he often becomes frustrated, blaming those around him, leaving staff in a difficult position.
Earlier in December, Trump seemed to nod off during a Cabinet meeting. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed concerns, asserting that Trump had been "listening attentively and running the entire three-hour marathon Cabinet meeting." Yet just days later, he appeared to doze again while welcoming leaders from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, during a ceremony that also involved signing peace agreements and facilitating U.S. access to critical minerals.
Trump’s health has been under close scrutiny for some time. The former president has defended himself, saying, "There has never been a President that has worked as hard as me! My hours are the longest, and my results are among the best."
