During a recent interview, former President Donald Trump briefly addressed his health, but an unusual moment caught attention when he struggled to recall a word. According to a TV report, Trump seemed to forget the term “Alzheimer’s” while speaking about his father, Fred Trump, who lived to 93 but suffered from the disease in his later years.
Trump reportedly said, “He had one problem, at a certain age, about 86, 87, he started getting, what do they call it?” He then gestured to his head and turned to his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, for help. When she supplied the word “Alzheimer’s,” he added, “Like an Alzheimer’s thing. Well, I don’t have it… I don’t think about it at all. You know why? Because whatever it is, my attitude is whatever.”
Trump went on to emphasize that he is in “great shape” and noted that longevity runs in his family, with both his mother and her relatives living into their 90s.
The interview also touched on marks observed on Trump’s hand. He explained that they were “only from shaking hands,” a claim confirmed by his lead physician, Captain Sean Barbaella, who said he had seen Trump shake hands for over an hour. Trump even showed his other hand, calling it “perfect.”
The reporter covering the interview also noted moments where Trump appeared to “fall asleep” during past interviews. Trump clarified, saying, “It’s boring as hell. I have to sit back and listen, and I move my hand so that people will know I’m listening. I’m hearing every word, and I can’t wait to get out.”
White House officials further explained to the magazine that Trump’s posture—leaning back or forward, closing his eyes, or looking down—is often just him taking notes and thinking, not dozing off. Leavitt added that he is “actively listening” even in these moments.
