CNN interrupted its regular programming to report on Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and her controversial role in the Trump administration.
During a live segment, Representative Greg Stanton did not hold back, calling for Noem’s immediate removal. The criticism followed her recent visit to Arizona near the Mexican border, where she condemned Democrats for criticizing the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts in Minnesota and other states.
In recent months, federal immigration agents sometimes masked have conducted raids on homes and businesses, at times without warrants, targeting undocumented immigrants. There have also been instances where individuals legally seeking asylum were arrested. Most recently, two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both 37, were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis, prompting nationwide outrage. This coverage mirrors similar controversies surrounding Trump’s law-and-order rhetoric and policy approaches in recent months.
Noem defended the actions, insisting, “Enforcing our immigration laws and arresting illegal criminals, including violent offenders, is not inhumane. What about the victims of these crimes? What about the drugs flowing over our borders, destroying communities? What about the families who lost loved ones?” Her remarks echo broader discussions on Trump’s approach to border security and his third-term ambitions.
Later, on CNN’s The Lead, anchor Jake Tapper asked Stanton for his reaction. Stanton was blunt: “How does she still have a job? She needs to be fired immediately. If not, impeachment should be considered. Her failures extend beyond immigration she oversees FEMA. Months ago, a catastrophic flood in Texas killed over 100 people, including children, and her delay in deploying urban search and rescue contributed to these deaths.”
The segment quickly gained traction on X, sparking heated reactions. One viewer wrote, “Enough talking our elected officials are exhausting with speeches and tweets with no action.” Another commented, “Stop just talking. Take action: remove her, reform ICE, investigate misconduct everything. It’s gone on too long.” A third added, “Noem’s delays directly cost lives. Stanton is right fire her. This isn’t oversight; it’s negligence.”
Noem has faced intense criticism following the deaths of Good and Pretti, and in each case, she characterized the victims as domestic threats who intended harm. Despite calls from top Democrats for her dismissal, the administration has defended her. President Trump even claimed the attacks on Noem were motivated by her gender, a statement reminiscent of his controversial defense of allies in other high-profile incidents.
