Distracted Trump cries 'that doctor ripped me off' after he paid for woman's eye surgery

During a speech that was meant to focus on voter ID laws and immigration, President Trump once again veered sharply off script this time pausing mid-criticism of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to talk about an eye surgery he claimed he paid for.

The event was organized to honor families who have lost loved ones to crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. But as has often been the case with Trump’s public appearances, the remarks wandered.

He began by criticizing voting procedures, questioning why identification isn’t required in every situation. From there, he shifted to Mayor Mamdani, saying he had met him and found him personally pleasant, but disagreed strongly with his political views. Trump then mocked reports that Mamdani had encouraged residents to help shovel snow during a major storm, suggesting the effort wouldn’t make much difference.

Mid-sentence, however, Trump abruptly changed focus after spotting someone in the audience. He called out to a woman he said he knew, asking about her eyesight and claiming he had given her “a lot of money” for cataract surgery. He joked that the doctor had “ripped him off,” drawing laughter from parts of the crowd. He went on to comment that the procedure would give her “20/20 vision” and mentioned seeing her on television wearing glasses.

The sudden detour lasted several moments before Trump pivoted back toward broader political themes, referencing the election and immigration policies.

The gathering itself was described by the White House as a solemn vigil honoring “Angel Families,” a term used for relatives of people killed by undocumented immigrants. Trump signed a proclamation declaring February 22 as “Angel Family Day,” commemorating two survivors and 62 individuals who lost their lives. The date marks the anniversary of Laken Riley’s death in 2024.

The ceremony, held in the East Room, included remarks from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Czar Tom Homan. According to the administration, the event was intended to underscore the importance of continued deportation efforts targeting individuals convicted of serious crimes.

Despite the formal setting, it was Trump’s unscripted aside about the eye surgery that quickly drew attention, adding another unexpected moment to a speech that had already taken several sharp turns.
