Super Bowl weekend turned into a full-blown showdown between very different halftime experiences, and the contrast could not have been clearer.
While millions tuned in to watch the Seattle Seahawks face the New England Patriots, viewers were spoiled for choice once halftime arrived. On one side was the official Super Bowl halftime show, headlined by global superstar Bad Bunny. On the other was Kid Rock’s “All-American” alternative event, created in partnership with Turning Point USA and aimed squarely at a conservative audience.
For those who preferred to skip the culture wars altogether, there was another beloved option: the Puppy Bowl. Animal Planet’s annual feel-good counterprogramming once again delivered a dose of pure joy, featuring rescue dogs from shelters across the country romping around a miniature stadium while commentators narrated their adorable play-by-play. Beyond the cuteness, the event promotes pet adoption and highlights the importance of giving abandoned animals a second chance.
This year’s Puppy Bowl reached an impressive 15.3 million viewers across Animal Planet, Discovery, TBS, truTV, HBO Max, and discovery+. It ranked as the top non-sports cable telecast of the day among key adult demographics and posted a 20 percent increase in reach compared to last year its strongest performance since 2018. Discovery’s Head of Content, Joseph Boyle, celebrated the milestone, saying the event continues to bring audiences together around programming that is both uplifting and meaningful.
Bad Bunny’s halftime show, however, operated on an entirely different scale. According to official figures, his performance drew 128.2 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched halftime shows in Super Bowl history. The Puerto Rican artist’s global appeal and high-energy production clearly resonated with a massive audience.
Kid Rock’s All-American event told a more modest story. The livestream reportedly drew about 6.1 million viewers on YouTube, eventually climbing to around 21 million views in the days that followed. The performance, which also featured Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice, and Gabby Barrett, sparked online debate after critics accused Kid Rock of lip-syncing and labeled the show disappointing. He later pushed back on those claims, attributing the issue to a syncing problem, though he acknowledged the performance was not actually live as initially described.
In the end, the weekend highlighted how fragmented entertainment has become. Whether viewers gravitated toward a global pop spectacle, a politically branded concert, or a stadium full of rescue puppies, there was no shortage of options and no shortage of opinions.
