Mary Trump Issues Urgent Warning—'We Are on the Brink'

Mary Trump, the estranged niece and outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, turned her criticism toward Senate Democrats in an urgent blog post on Friday. She warned that "the precipice is here" due to Democratic support for the GOP-led continuing resolution (CR).

Mary Trump, who has been vocal against her uncle for years and authored the 2020 tell-all book Too Much and Never Enough, has increasingly criticized Democrats following the 2024 election. In her book, she described Trump as "utterly incapable of leading this country," calling it dangerous to let him maintain power.

In her blog post, titled "Break Glass: THIS Is the Emergency," Mary Trump lashed out at Senate Democrats who had not yet publicly opposed the CR, a bill aimed at funding the government through September 30. She condemned those considering supporting the measure, describing their "level of appeasement" to Republicans as "dangerous beyond my ability to convey" and labeled it "abject and sickening cowardice." She urged her readers to contact their senators and protest any Democratic support for the bill.

She specifically criticized her home state senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, for backing the CR, accusing them of betraying their party, their base, and the country. "I am ashamed," she said in her post.

Despite the opposition, the Senate passed the continuing resolution by a 54-46 vote, with nine Democrats and one independent voting in favor. The measure passed after significant pressure from the GOP, and Republicans hold majorities in both the Senate and the House.

Schumer, who initially opposed the CR, ultimately voted in favor, arguing that avoiding a government shutdown was the more responsible course of action. His reversal drew harsh criticism from key Democratic figures, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

Ahead of the Senate vote, nearly all House Democrats, except one, had voted against the GOP's stopgap bill.

Schumer defended his decision in a statement to CNN, explaining that while the CR was flawed, a government shutdown would have far worse consequences. He warned that a shutdown could give figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk the power to determine essential services and disrupt programs like SNAP (food assistance for children) and federal government services.

In a post on Truth Social, former President Trump congratulated Schumer for his decision, calling it a "smart move" that could lead to a "new direction and beginning" for the country.

In contrast, Pelosi expressed defiance on social media, reiterating that House Democrats would continue to fight against Republican policies that she described as "false choices" that hurt the American people, particularly through cuts to Medicaid in favor of tax breaks for billionaires.

House Speaker Mike Johnson also weighed in, criticizing Schumer for his decision and calling on Senate Democrats to decide whether they would support the government or join House Democrats in shutting it down.

The CR will now be sent to President Trump for final approval.
