King Charles faced with ‘trickier than ever’ situation after Trump NATO controversy

King Charles is reportedly preparing for a major state visit to the United States, but recent remarks by Donald Trump have put the monarch in a delicate position.

The royal couple is thought to be planning the visit as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of US Independence this April, although Buckingham Palace has not officially confirmed the trip. Sources say Trump’s recent comments on NATO have created a challenging backdrop for the visit.

Last week, the former US President stirred controversy by claiming in a Fox News interview that NATO allies “stayed a little off the front lines” in Afghanistan and that the US “never needed” its NATO partners despite the US being the only member to ever invoke the alliance’s “all for one, and one for all” clause following 9/11. Hours later, he reversed course, praising British troops as “among the greatest of all warriors.”

Some reports suggest Trump’s reversal may have come after King Charles expressed his concerns to the White House, though neither Buckingham Palace nor the White House has confirmed this.

Royal commentator Jennie Bond says the King is well-positioned to act as a “bridge” between the UK and the US. She told the Mirror:

“We are fortunate to have a King so skilled in diplomacy, because Donald Trump has made the monarch’s role trickier than ever. The President is so enamoured with British royalty that any attention from them becomes significant in the so-called special relationship between our countries.”

Bond added that any decision about a state visit rests with the UK government, not the King, but it’s unlikely the trip would be canceled. She also noted that if King Charles and Queen Camilla attend, there’s no reason Prince William wouldn’t also visit for the World Cup.

Trump’s initial NATO remarks drew sharp criticism. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the comments “frankly appalling,” and Prince Harry who served two tours in Afghanistan emphasized that the sacrifices of British soldiers “deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect.”

Following the backlash, Trump took to Truth Social, posting a tribute to British troops:

“The great and very brave soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America! In Afghanistan, 457 died, many were badly injured, and they were among the greatest of all warriors. It’s a bond too strong to ever be broken. The UK Military, with tremendous heart and soul, is second to none (except for the US!). We love you all, and always will!”
