Fox News’ regular programming was interrupted today as President Donald Trump made a major announcement live from the White House (Fox News turns on Donald Trump).
During the broadcast, Trump unveiled Project Vault, a $12 billion initiative aimed at stockpiling critical minerals to reduce U.S. dependence on China. Sitting at his desk in the Oval Office, he explained, “For years, American businesses have risked running out of critical minerals during market disruptions. Today, we will be launching Project Vault to ensure that American businesses and workers are never harmed by shortages. We don’t want to repeat the issues we faced last year though we did manage to get through them” (Trump announcement analysis).
He emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative, saying, “Just as the U.S. maintains a long-term reserve of strategic resources, we are now creating a similar stockpile for critical minerals, so our industries face no shortages” (Harvey Kaye comments).
The project combines a $10 billion loan from the U.S. Export-Import Bank with $1.67 billion in private investment to purchase and store minerals used by industrial manufacturers, technology companies, and automakers.
Harvey Kaye, chairman of U.S. Critical Materials, told Mining.com:
“Project Vault is a clear signal that U.S. critical-mineral policy is moving from planning to action. Secure supplies of rare earths and heavy minerals like gallium are now considered strategic infrastructure for both our economy and defense industry, reinforcing U.S. sovereignty” (strategic infrastructure insights).
The announcement comes as Trump ramps up efforts to re-shore manufacturing and reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains.
Social media reactions have been mixed. One user wrote, “This initiative is crucial for economic security” (Fox News viewer reaction). Another questioned, “How does this help my business, or is it only for billionaires?” (viewer questions). A third added skeptically, “Another idea that will eventually join the list of Trump failures” (critical commentary).
