Author Michael Wolff’s efforts to serve Melania Trump with legal papers have led him to a surprising conclusion: the former First Lady appears to live in New York, not Florida as officially claimed.
Speaking on the Inside Trump's Head podcast, Wolff explained that his legal team’s attempts to deliver documents revealed Melania Trump’s actual residence, suggesting she does not live with her husband in Washington, D.C., despite her highly publicized move from New York.
“This is the question at the heart of this lawsuit: Where does she actually live?” Wolff said. “They will either have to prove she lives in Florida or accept that her primary residence is in New York.” Wolff’s lawsuit revolves around allegations linking Melania Trump to Jeffrey Epstein.
Although Melania holds a Florida driver’s license, Wolff pointed to evidence in the recently released Melania documentary indicating her strong ties to New York. “All they have to claim she is a Florida resident is a driver’s license. In Florida, you only need an address to get one, whether it’s a second home like Mar-a-Lago. The same applies to voting,” he added.
Wolff has been trying to serve legal documents following his October lawsuit, which claims Melania threatened to sue him for over $1 billion unless he retracted statements about her Epstein connections.
On February 1, Wolff told the Daily Beast about the challenges of delivering the papers: “We have not been able to hand our papers to the first lady, who is protected by one of the world’s most skilled security teams.” Attempts to serve through the White House failed, and efforts to deliver the documents to her attorney in Florida were rejected. Even at her longtime Manhattan Trump Tower apartment, doormen confirmed her residency but refused the papers.
A spokesperson for Melania addressed the situation, saying, “The Daily Beast has already had to issue multiple retractions based on Michael Wolff’s false claims. Yet, he continues these unlawful actions.”
Wolff’s account contrasts with court documents filed in Palm Beach County, which list Mar-a-Lago as Melania’s permanent address as of 2025. Locals say she is rarely seen in public, living a very private life. Reports suggest that while Donald Trump resides in the family quarters at Mar-a-Lago, Melania stays in a separate tower, drawing comparisons to a modern-day Rapunzel.
The lawsuit was filed under Florida’s anti-SLAPP law, designed to protect First Amendment rights, which will grant Wolff subpoena powers once Melania is officially served.
Wolff also shared that his campaign has attracted around 25,000 donors, raising over $800,000 in support of his legal battle.
