Donald Trump is once again drawing attention this time for enthusiastically promoting Melania Trump’s new documentary in a way that many critics say doesn’t quite match reality.
At a recent GOP fundraising dinner on March 25, Trump praised the film in glowing terms, even joking that his wife had become a “movie star” with the “number one movie” and top streaming success. He added a lighthearted remark that there’s “only room for one star in the family,” suggesting Melania’s rise might even be a problem for him.
There is a kernel of truth behind his claim. Shortly after its March 9 release, the documentary did reach the top spot on Amazon Prime Video in the United States. For a brief period, it became the most-watched title on the platform. However, that momentum didn’t last long, as the film slipped down the rankings within weeks.
What’s fueling skepticism isn’t just the drop in streaming position it’s the contrast between Trump’s bold claims and the film’s broader reception. Reports of low theater turnout, combined with sharply divided reviews, have led many to question the narrative of overwhelming success.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the documentary has one of the widest critic-audience gaps in recent memory. Critics gave it a very low score, describing it as overly flattering and lacking depth, while audience ratings were overwhelmingly positive. This kind of split often raises eyebrows, especially in politically charged contexts where perception can be influenced by partisanship.

Social media reactions have been predictably intense. Some users mocked the idea that a film with limited theatrical buzz could simultaneously be a runaway hit, while others accused Trump of exaggerating to boost its image. A few critics even dismissed the documentary outright, calling it more of a promotional piece than a substantive film.
At the same time, supporters point to its brief streaming success and strong audience ratings as proof that it resonated with a certain segment of viewers. In today’s media landscape, especially with politically connected figures, success can look very different depending on which metrics you emphasize.
In the end, the debate around Melania Trump’s documentary says as much about today’s polarized media environment as it does about the film itself. One side sees overhyped promotion disconnected from reality, while the other sees a successful release that found its audience even if only for a short time.
