Trump continues to brag about ‘Movie Star’ Melania despite box office flop

During the National Republican Congressional Committee’s annual fundraising dinner, former President Donald Trump took a moment in his speech to highlight his wife’s recent accomplishments. Turning to Melania Trump, he praised her, saying, “And our great First Lady who now turns out to be a fantastic movie star.”

The comments referred to Melania, her self-titled feature-length documentary produced by Amazon MGM Studios, which chronicles the 20 days leading up to Trump’s 2025 inauguration. Although the film had a limited impact at the box office, Trump’s remarks reflect his pride in his wife’s foray into filmmaking. Within the partisan atmosphere of the NRCC dinner, his remarks were met with laughter, a characteristic moment of his energetic, freewheeling speaking style designed to rally Republican supporters.

Melania hit theaters on January 30, 2026, and later streamed on Amazon Prime Video. Its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada brought in over $7 million, marking the best debut for a non-concert documentary in more than a decade. However, with a $40 million acquisition cost and a $35 million marketing budget, the film was unlikely to turn a theatrical profit, experiencing a 67% drop in revenue in its second weekend.

When it premiered on Amazon Prime Video on March 9, 2026, the documentary quickly rose to the #1 spot in the U.S. movie charts. By March 12, it still held the top position among films, though it ranked third overall across all content, behind series like Scarpetta and Young Sherlock. As of March 25, 2026, it had dropped to third in the movie category, overtaken by Mercy and Sinners.

Industry analysts note that Amazon’s Top 10 rankings are self-reported and their methodology is not publicly disclosed. Despite box office losses, Amazon MGM Studios expressed optimism that strong streaming performance could offset costs through advertising revenue and new Prime subscriptions.

Melania has also launched her own production company, Muse Films, in late 2025, signaling her intention to continue in media and entertainment. Following her 2026 documentary, she is planning a three-part follow-up docuseries and is actively involved in its creative direction, including editing and marketing.
