Trump makes worrying 6-word comment on Melania as he says 'there's only room for one star'

During a recent gathering with GOP Congressional members in Washington, D.C., Donald Trump made an unusual and widely discussed remark about his wife, Melania Trump. The 79-year-old former president spoke about the First Lady in relation to her recent self-titled documentary, delivering a verdict in his characteristic, peculiar style: “So this is not good.”

Melania’s documentary, which premiered on January 30, chronicles the days and weeks leading up to Donald Trump’s second inauguration in January 2024. The Amazon MGM Studios production aimed to showcase her perspective and experiences as First Lady, but it struggled to impress both critics and audiences. While Trump boasted about her supposed “number one movie” status, box-office data tells a very different story. The film earned an estimated $16.66 million against reported costs exceeding $75 million, and it holds just an 11% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes though audience reception was more favorable, with a 98% approval rating.

Trump, addressing an audience at the GOP event, enthusiastically described Melania as “a fantastic movie star” and claimed, “She had the number one movie, and now she’s number one on streaming.” He then launched into a bewildering explanation of why her sudden stardom was problematic, saying, “You can’t have two stars in one family…there’s only room for one star in a family; this is not a good sign.” He even dramatized a playful exchange with Melania, jokingly acting out a conversation: “‘Darling, congratulations on being number one.’ ‘Oh, thank you, darling.’ There’s no talking to her!”

Despite his confusing statements, Trump concluded by praising his wife’s work as First Lady. “She’s doing a good job, this First Lady, I’ll tell ya, she really is. People love her. People love her,” he said.

The remarks quickly caught the attention of social media users, many of whom expressed disbelief and frustration. On X (formerly Twitter), one user wrote, “The lying is just so brazen and stupid now,” while another added, “Omg, lies with impunity.” Others mocked Trump’s insistence on exaggerating the documentary’s success, posting comments like, “His actually still talking about that movie with the First Lady? Seriously?” and “She never had the number one movie and certainly doesn’t have the number one streaming movie. MAGA never tires of being lied to, even about the little things.”

The documentary itself has been a point of controversy beyond Trump’s remarks. Directed by Brett Ratner, a filmmaker who has faced public scandals in the past, the film reportedly cost Amazon MGM Studios over $75 million for production and marketing. Despite the substantial investment, it failed to resonate with critics or achieve the commercial success Trump claimed.

Overall, the former president’s comments highlight a recurring pattern of exaggeration and theatrical storytelling when discussing personal achievements or those of his family. While he attempted to portray Melania’s documentary as a major triumph, the reality of its critical reception and box-office performance paints a far less impressive picture, leaving viewers and social media users alike questioning the accuracy of his statements.
