A prominent GB News commentator has issued a strong warning that Keir Starmer could face serious financial consequences from Donald Trump due to his recent agreement with the EU.
Former Conservative MP Steve Baker expressed concern on GB News that Starmer’s new deal might prompt President Trump to impose tariffs on the UK. This warning came as Trump announced plans for a 50% tariff on the European Union ahead of upcoming trade talks in Brussels.
When asked whether the EU might risk a trade war with the U.S., Baker instead focused on the UK’s position, saying, "Just wait until President Trump realizes that Starmer is committing the UK to a common agrifood area with the EU and accepting their rules."
He emphasized that the "EU reset deal" supported by Starmer could have significant consequences, pointing out that the UK would effectively be under EU jurisdiction again.
Baker also noted that Britain has effectively joined the EU’s electricity market, emissions trading scheme, and carbon border adjustment mechanism, warning, "I would expect the U.S. to respond by imposing tariffs."
He argued that the governing elite have never fully supported Brexit, and claimed that Labour aims to bring the UK back into the European Union.
While the legal details are still unclear and may evolve, Baker suggested Labour’s approach could create serious challenges for Britain’s future trade relations.
"Starmer has an opportunity to change course," he said, "but what will he do when Trump realizes he has chosen alignment with the EU over the U.S.’s established trade policies?"
The discussion sparked strong reactions on social media, with one user on X saying, "Trump clearly knows about our leader disregarding the democratic Brexit vote. I hope he calls out Starmer for treating UK citizens with contempt while currying favor elsewhere."
Another commented, "Trump must already be aware. This is a clear rebuke of Starmer for betraying the democratic Brexit mandate."
A third user added, "If the UK were still in the EU, at least Starmer would have someone else to blame instead of constantly targeting the Tories."
