Representative Shri Thanedar, a brave Michigan Democrat, introduced seven articles of impeachment against the self-proclaimed "tough guy" Donald Trump, accusing him of a laundry list of abuses including violating the Constitution and undermining democracy itself. But guess what? Even within his own party, there's hesitation to act. Talk about disappointing.
Let’s be real. Trump, the man who got impeached not once, but twice during his first term (and somehow managed to dodge consequences both times thanks to the Senate’s predictable rubber stamp), is still a free man. And now, here we are, looking at a second Trump term that promises even more chaos, as he continues to act like the rule of law is optional.
In response to Thanedar’s call to action, California Democrat Representative Pete Aguilar made it clear that impeachment is not even on the radar for most Democrats. Why? Because they have zero faith in House and Senate Republicans doing anything remotely responsible. In simpler terms, it’s like trying to talk sense to a brick wall—it’s just not going to happen.
Meanwhile, a trio of House Democrats (shoutout to Representatives Robin Kelly, Kweisi Mfume, and Jerry Nadler) quickly pulled back support, proving that even the most well-meaning attempts to hold Trump accountable can’t survive the lack of party unity and coordination.
But let’s not lose focus on why Thanedar is even pushing forward with this. It’s because Trump has repeatedly shown he doesn’t care about the Constitution, and he’s only interested in serving his own interests at the expense of the people. Case in point: the Kilmar Abrego Garcia debacle. Trump defied a Supreme Court ruling that required him to facilitate the return of an individual who was wrongfully deported. His response? Ignore it and twist the law in his favor. If this isn’t a textbook example of abuse of power, I don’t know what is.
Trump’s response to all of this? As expected, classic Trumpian deflection. “Some guy I’ve never heard of” – that’s his level of maturity when faced with legitimate charges. His favorite game is pretending he’s the victim, even though he’s the one who’s been undermining democracy at every turn. When he finally gets called out, it’s the same old narrative: "What did I do? Why me?"
Let’s be clear. Trump is a danger to this country. His repeated violations of the law, blatant disregard for democratic institutions, and ongoing pattern of personal power grabs make him not just unfit for office but a clear and present danger to everything this nation stands for. The idea that he’s still in a position to cause more damage is terrifying.
But, of course, with the GOP still holding the reins in Congress, don’t expect anything to come of these impeachment efforts any time soon. It’s going to take a miracle for accountability to finally catch up with him. Maybe, just maybe, if Democrats can take back the majority in the midterms, the momentum for action will finally break through that wall of Republican indifference. But right now? It's just another round in Trump's endless, frustrating game of dodge-the-consequences.
