Piers Morgan recently opened up about his friendship with Donald Trump, sharing the highs and lows of a relationship shaped by loyalty and ultimately tested by politics.
Speaking with Jordan Peterson on his podcast, Morgan reflected on their connection that began long before Trump became President of the United States, back when they appeared together on the U.S. version of The Apprentice. After leaving CNN in 2015, Piers recalled that Trump was one of only “three or four people in America” who reached out to check on him.
“He contacted me every month for a few months, saying, ‘How are you doing? Are you okay? Can I help?’” Morgan said. “People might say he had a vested interest, but lots of people did. He was still one of the only ones who actually followed through.”
When Trump won the presidency in 2016, Piers called to congratulate him and asked for just one favor in return: his first international TV interview. Trump agreed immediately. Later, the pair met for a 45-minute interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “It was spectacularly good for my career, and he kept his word,” Morgan admitted.
Loyalty, he explained, was central to Trump’s personality. “If you were loyal to him, he was very, very, very loyal back,” Morgan said, noting that it’s a trait often overlooked by critics.
Their relationship, however, eventually hit a breaking point. Morgan revealed that tensions rose when he challenged Trump on claims that the U.S. election was stolen. “I’ve told him to his face,” he said. “And he doesn’t want to hear it.”
Despite the fallout, it seems they have been able to reconnect. Last year on Good Morning Britain, Piers shared that he had spoken with Trump on the morning of a high-stakes meeting with President Zelenskyy just hours before a proposed deal between the U.S. and Ukraine fell through after a tense exchange in the White House involving both presidents and Vice President JD Vance.
“I was in a black cab in London, and my phone goes, I could see it was him, I have him under 'DJT' in my phone,” Morgan said, flashing a mischievous smile.
